Global field lacrosse market
Field lacrosse, meant mainly for men, involves more body contact, which mandates the use of protective gear. Field lacrosse equipment consists of a stick and protective gears, including a lacrosse helmet with face mask, lacrosse gloves, and arm and shoulder pads. Players are also required to wear mouth guards and athletic supporter with cup pocket and protective cup. During 2016, the global market for field lacrosse accounted for more than 37% of the overall revenue generated by the global lacrosse market.
“Lacrosse combines elements of several popular sports such as football, soccer, and basketball among others. Lacrosse involves a lot of running like football and is similar to ice hockey where players check opponents and use long sticks to propel the ball forward. Outdoor lacrosse has a similar aesthetics to that of soccer. Lacrosse is becoming increasingly popular on a global level owing to its similarities to other sports,” says Brijesh Choubey, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on outdoor gear.
Global box lacrosse market
Box lacrosse equipment contributed almost 37% to the global lacrosse equipment market during 2016. Box lacrosse players prefer sticks made from metals such as aluminum, as opposed to wooden sticks, which are mainly limited to box lacrosse leagues. In the National Lacrosse League (NLL), wooden lacrosse sticks are not allowed. Apart from a lacrosse stick, players wear certain protective equipment such as lacrosse helmet, gloves, and arm and shoulder pads. Women who played the sport of lacrosse typically played the more genteel women’s field lacrosse version. Recently, in North America, girls’ and women’s box lacrosse leagues have been established in Ontario, Alberta, Minneapolis, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia.
Global women’s lacrosse market
During 2016, the global women’s lacrosse market accounted for a revenue of almost USD359 million. Women’s lacrosse rules are specifically designed to limit physical contact between players. Because of the lack of contact, the only protective equipment required is a mouth guard and face guard/goggles. This type of lacrosse typically permits only composite and aluminum in the sticks, while the head is made out of compact plastic where the mesh, sidewall, and pocket form.
