Global INS market to witness considerable shift toward MEMS technologies by 2020

Renewable energy

This market research study presents a detailed segmentation of the global inertial navigation systems market by end-user (defense and commercial) and by geography (Americas, APAC, and EMEA). The key leading vendors identified in the market are Honeywell International, Northrop Grumman, Rockwell Collins, Sagem, and Thales Group.

Technavio’s market research analysts estimate the global INS market to grow at a CAGR of around 13% between 2016 and 2020. INS is primarily used in commercial aviation, for defense purposes such as in ground vehicles, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aircraft, for naval applications such as in ships and submarines, and in space research (spacecraft). Growing demand for accurate navigation and high availability of smaller, robust components at cheaper rate are driving the INS market. The Americas account for 44% of the total market share, owing to the growing passenger air traffic in the US and the augmented demand for aircraft to accommodate passengers.

The new market research report from Technavio provides a breakdown and analysis of the INS segments by technology.

“Of late, inertial navigation sensors such as MEMS are gaining popularity due to their smaller size, lower cost, and lighter weight advantages. Therefore, the systems using mechanical instruments and RLG are expected to be replaced by interferometric fiber optic gyro (IFOG) and MEMS technologies. Continuous developments in MEMS sensors will result in lightweight inertial sensors that are small, economical, and reliable. The military forces increasingly prefer these sensors in smart and competent munitions, fire control systems, missile and aircraft autopilots, radar antenna motion compensation, and tactical missile guidance systems,” says Abhay Singh, Lead Analyst, Aerospace & Defense, Technavio Research

The defense sector is the biggest end-user of INS, accounting for around 72% of the total market share. The increasing defense budgets worldwide, rising tensions between the Middle Eastern countries, and border disputes in Asian countries have led to an augmented demand for modernized systems and technologies to strengthen military forces and armaments. For instance, in 2016, the US Air Force awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman under Military GPS User Equipment Program (MGUE) that involves the development of GPS receivers and INS and GPS systems to ensure efficient transmission of military signals. Therefore, the growing demand for modernized systems and technologies like INS in the defense sector will aid in the growth of this market segment by the end of 2020.

The key vendors in the global INS market include Honeywell International, Northrop Grumman, Rockwell Collins, Sagem, and Thales Group. The market is highly fragmented and competitive owing to the presence of well-diversified international and small- and medium-sized players in the market. The market competition is expected to intensify with the increase in product extensions, technological innovations, and increase in the number of mergers and acquisitions.
