The top three revenue contributing feedstock segments are discussed below:

Global biomass boiler market by woody biomass

Woody biomass includes wood chips, logs, mill dust, and crops such as tall grasses, including switchgrass and silver grass. These energy crops produce energy efficiently and require little fertilizers and less fertile soil as opposed to other types of agriculture crops. Woody biomass is the only viable alternative to coal-based energy generation. The woody biomass segment of the global industrial biomass boiler market accounted for more than 53% of the overall market share to become the largest revenue generating segment during 2015.

Biomass district heating is being increasingly used for energy generation in the global market. A district heating center is more convenient as it can use flexible fuel to provide heat when there is a shortage of biomass supply, unlike individual heating. The process is also cost effective and does not require individual boilers at usage areas. Emission regulations about district heating are fueling the widespread adoption of biomass boilers across the globe. The implementation of carbon tax policy by governments of countries such as the US, the UK, Ireland, and Australia is also a driver for the increasing popularity of biomass district heating,” says Thanikachalam Chandrasekaran, a lead analyst at Technavio for power.

Short-rotation woody crops are best suited for the production of biomass. These crops conserve soil and water, reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and recycle nutrients. This leads to zero net emissions from harvesting, processing, and transport. Such advantages are propelling the demand for woody feedstock for biomass production during the forecast period.

Global biomass boiler market by agricultural biomass

The global biomass boiler market for agricultural biomass accounted for more than 26% of the overall market share in 2015. In agricultural biomass production, agricultural residues after harvest such as corn stover, wheat straw, energy crops, and liquid and solid residues are used. Agricultural biomass can be used without affecting the availability of food crops or increasing the demand for land required for agriculture as they are the by-products of food crops. The growth of the global biomass boiler market by agricultural biomass is expected to showcase substantial growth during the forecast period, especially in developing countries and agriculture-based economies such as India and China.

Global biomass boiler market by urban residue

During 2015, the global market for urban residue biomass boilers accounted for almost 21% of the overall market share. The growth of this market segment is driven fundamentally by the rising demand for urban residue management solutions from densely populated regions such as Europe and countries in APAC such as China and India. The US is the world leader in terms of volume of urban residue produced, with a municipal solid waste output of about 621,000 tons per day. During the forecast period, current leading municipal solid waste management markets such as Europe will slump. However, markets such as South Asia, Latin America, and Central Europe are expected to witness substantial growth fueled by factors such as rapid urbanization and growing municipal solid waste build-up.
