  • Hair styling sprays to account for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – Henkel, Kao, L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Shiseido, and Unilever

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global hair spray market to grow at a CAGR of over 19% between 2016 and 2020. The demand for hair sprays is augmented by consistent product innovations through technological advancements. Vendors are introducing technologically advanced products, which are generally priced slightly higher than regular ones to meet the increasing demand for more efficient and novel products that are better matched to the requirements and lifestyles of consumers. Such products provide benefits like UV protection, scalp care, and moisturizing benefits. The Americas accounted for more than 36% of the overall market space in 2015 to become the dominant revenue generator in the global hair spray market. The US, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico are the key markets for hair sprays in the Americas.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the hair spray segments based on the product.

“A rise in vendor partnerships with salons is an ongoing trend in the market. Marketers of hair care products are tying up with prominent professional salons to reach their end-users and gain market shares. Several companies in the market are also launching with their own professional salons. L’Oréal Paris Professionnel, Henkel’s Schwarzkopf Professional Salon, and Wella Professionals Salon by Procter & Gamble are some examples of such salons,” says Brijesh Kumar Choubey, Lead Analyst, Consumer & Retail, Technavio Research.

By 2020, the hair styling spray segment is expected to account for more than 56% of the market’s revenue to continue its dominance over the global hair spray market. Hair styling sprays are available in two formats – hair mousse and hair lacquer. Of these, the hair mousse segment had the highest revenue. It includes products like styling foams, hair straighteners, and heat protection items. The growing preference for dry shampoo as a regularly used hair styling and protection agent over hair styling sprays is expected to slow the growth of this segment during the forecast period.

The key vendors in the market include Henkel, Kao, L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Shiseido, and Unilever. The market is marked by the presence of both regional and international vendors where Procter & Gamble, L’Oréal, and Unilever dominate the market in terms of their broad range of products and brands. The growing penetration of small players in the mass beauty category is posing a tough competition for the established players as these regional vendors are offering organic and herbal beauty products to consumers.
