Global in-flight broadband market: Narrow-body aircraft

In 2015, the narrow-body aircraft segment accounted for around 42% share in the global In-flight broadband market.  The diverse growth between regions, business models, and airplane types continues to strengthen the fragmentation of the market. New technological advancements such as IFE systems integrated with in-flight broadband has also supported this fragmentation. These features have upsurged the demand for in-flight broadband services.

“The penetration rate of in-flight broadband in narrow-body aircraft is increasing with connectivity platforms such as Ku-band, L-band, and HTS. It is expected that the SATCOM units on narrow-body aircraft will grow from 13,000 units in 2015 to 20,000 units by 2020, directly influencing the implementation of in-flight broadband services. The growth is due to the growing demand for in-flight connectivity in short and medium haul routes in both LCCs to full-service carriers (FSCs),” says Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on aerospace components.

The LCCs usually operate through narrow-body aircraft and are expected to implement models like pay-as-you-go where the passenger will only pay for the service he requires.

Global in-flight broadband market: Wide-body aircraft

Technavio expects an additional 8,830 airplanes to enter service in the next 20 years, allowing airlines to serve new markets more efficiently than in the past.  The growing demand for high connectivity in long-haul travel is driving the in-service broadband connectivity market. The highest portion of wide-body in-flight connectivity comes from L-band services. Owing to the emphasis on connectivity speed, a shift from L-band to Ku-band is expected to take place, which is going to increase the market share of Ku-band in wide-body aircraft. Since the wide-body jets usually operate on long-haul routes, it is important for the carrier to keep the passenger engaged. Often, the passengers, particularly from Asia and the Middle East prefer media entertainment in regional languages. As it is impossible to include media in all languages, so it will be convenient to enable the in-flight internet connectivity for the better experience of travelers.

Global in-flight broadband market: Business jet

The growing demand for luxury and the efficient use of cabin space, media integration, high-speed connectivity such as Ku-band, and streaming in IFE systems is driving the market growth for in-flight broadband in the business jet segment. The need for business jet aviation is swelling on an international scale, as corporate travelers fly to far-off destinations, especially within the emerging markets of Brazil, China, India, and Russia. Apart from this, growing innovations in SATCOM that provide Ka-bandwidth are also driving the market’s growth. SATCOM allows customers to access connectivity even at an altitude range 35,000-40,000 feet above the ground. The demand for in-flight broadband connectivity in business jets is driving the need for high-bandwidth connectivity, which would have a great impact on the HTS in-service platform during the forecast period.
