The top three revenue contributing technology segments are discussed below:

Global fuel cell breath analyzer market

The fuel cell segment accounted for around 42% of the global breath analyzer market in 2015. The reason behind the large share of this market segment is the higher accuracy rate that these devices are capable of delivering. Fuel cell technology is a new technology in the market and has gained popularity as it offers greater reliability, accuracy, long life, and mobility of devices that deploy this technology. Fuel cell finds its major applications in law enforcement agencies, where accurate yet quick measurement of blood alcohol content (BAC) is necessary. Fuel cell sensors depend on an electrochemical process that oxidizes the alcohol in a breath sample. This process produces an electrical current that the device measures to determine the BAC.

The constant improvements and innovations in the sensor technology and design, will make these devices more accurate and less expensive during the forecast period. The fuel cell technology is more common in the European countries and developed countries such as the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan due to the strict road safety regulations and safety control, along with easy availability of the devices in these countries,” says Amber Chourasia, a senior analyst at Technavio for research on lab equipment.

Global semiconductor breath analyzer market

In 2015, the semiconductor segment accounted for around 36% of the global breath analyzer market and is the most expensive technology available to measure BAC. However, it stands unique among all other technologies as its production involves very low cost. It uses a small bead of a metal oxide.  A voltage is applied, which produces a small standing current, and while coming in contact with alcohol, the surface resistivity and strength of this current changes. The change in current can then be cast-off to measure the concentration of the particular substance in the sample. The easy integration of the technology in the smartphone modules and plug-ins has led to the introduction of smartphone analyzers. These analyzers are portable, cost -effective and compact, and is mostly purchased and used by individuals to check for legal levels of BAC before driving or other activities.

Global infrared breath analyzer market

The infrared segment accounted for around 22% of the global breath analyzer market. The high cost of devices using this technology has resulted in the high shares of the segment. Infrared breath analyzers use the most precise technologies and are mostly found in police stations, hospitals, and diagnostics centers. The major end-user of this segment is healthcare sector generating revenues of around 45%. The healthcare sector uses this technology for the detection of tuberculosis, asthma, H. Piroli infection, and cancer at early stages. Infrared breath analyzer utilizes infrared spectroscopy to measure and estimate BAC, and the levels of other substances in the sample. The instrument’s detector measures the alteration in the amount of a particular wavelength of infrared radiation that passes from an infrared source to a detector, through a sample chamber. This change in radiation is monitored and analyzed by a processor within the instrument and is used to calculate the alcohol concentration in the sample. The ability of infrared technology to detect more chemical compounds will lead to increase in its applications annually. The only drawback of this segment is that the devices that use infrared technology for BAC detection are often large and cannot be easily carried.
