Biometric Spending in government sector: Key market research findings

  • New government initiatives like e-voting
  • Adoption of multimodal biometrics

Technavio has added a new market research report on global biometrics spending in government sector, to its biometrics portfolio. Technavio’s market research analysts estimate the global biometrics spending market in government sector to grow at a CAGR of more than 14% between 2015 and 2019. North America accounts for the largest market share occupying around 33%, thanks to US and Canadian governments investing in a number of biometric solutions.

The new market analysis from Technavio discusses in detail the key drivers and trends responsible for growth, as well as the segments with the maximum growth potential.

Advantages, such as high-security and 24X7 monitoring and reliability, are triggering demand for cloud-based biometrics in the government sector. E-voting is a new government initiative in many countries, implemented by using cloud-based biometrics. This system provides remote accessibility, transparency and security to the voting process, by verifying the voter’s identity against a database.

Of late, governments of many countries are adopting biometrics to monitor employee attendance, rationing, and border control. For instance, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been issuing the Aadhaar Card for biometric attendance systems in government organizations. Aadhar card, through its front-end system performs a biometric scan, which is sent to the back-end system for real-time biometric authentication. It is expected to increase employee productivity and operational efficiency.

“Governments are adopting multimodal biometric system, which is a combination of biometric technologies such as fingerprint, face, palm, vein, and iris recognition. For instance, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has introduced the HumanID Program, which helps officials identify suspects from a distance of less than 10 feet and up to 150 feet.   SecuRegister is a multimodal biometric system that captures several biometric features, which are then linked to documents such as passport and driver’s license, thereby helping to retrieve data about an individual from the database,” says Navin Rajendra, Lead Analyst, IT Hardware, Software, Services, Technavio Research.

Key vendors in the global biometrics spending market in the government sector includes 3M Cogent, BioEnable, Crossmatch, NEC and Safran. The presence of numerous global and regional vendors offering solutions at competitive prices results in high bargaining power of buyers.
