Global Automotive Flywheel Market – New Market Research Report

Renewable energy

The global automotive flywheel market is currently valued at around 64 million units and is expected to surpass 77 million units by 2021, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on the global automotive flywheel market, under its powertrain portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends and offers an analysis of key vendors like Schaeffler, Linamar, ZF, and Valeo.

According to Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead analyst for powertrain research at Technavio, “The automotive industry is expected to expand in emerging countries like China, India, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, and parts of Eastern Europe. The growing penetration of passenger cars in emerging economies during the forecast period is expected to translate to the demand for automotive flywheel in these regions.

It is estimated that two-thirds of the global consumer spending comes from rapid growing markets (RGMs) like China, India, Brazil, and South Korea. The population of the middle class is growing rapidly, with the average number of household earnings projected to almost double by 2020. The increased purchasing power is likely to lead to the demand for automobiles and subsequently, automotive flywheels.

Increasing penetration of dual-mass flywheel

OEMs are trying to reduce the weight of the car and provide smaller and lighter engines, which produce high levels of torque at low engine speeds. Ford EcoBoost engine produces a maximum torque of up to 200 Nm (Newton meters) at 1,400 rpm. All the lightweight measures, such as the use of lighter engines and gearboxes or downsizing of engines, result in increased vibration levels and require a different technology, which can be fulfilled by dual-mass flywheels.

Growing research on kinetic energy recovery system (KERS)

KERS helps to recover the waste heat in the form of kinetic energy that is created by the braking process. The energy is stored in system-battery and flywheel where the energy is converted into power and then used to boost acceleration. KERS system is likely to be a developing trend, which is still in its nascent stage to provide fuel efficiency. During the forecast period, OEMs are expected to develop the system and adapt accordingly to leverage the advantages offered by KERS systems.
