All-weather landing system: Key market research findings

  • APAC dominates the market geographically
  • ILS segment accounts for a majority of the market’s revenue
  • Key vendors – Honeywell, NEC, Rockwell Collins, Thales, and Universal Avionics

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global all-weather landing system market to grow at a CAGR of more than 5% between 2016 and 2020. The market is driven primarily by the emergence of the autopilot landing system.  With the use of computers in a landing system, the heading, altitude, airspeed, and distance can be effectively monitored and measured by autopilot systems to ensure safe landing of an aircraft during adverse climatic conditions and low visibility. These systems are also used at airports that face dense snow, rain, or fog. In 2015, the global all-weather landing system market was dominated by the APAC region with a market share of more than 34%. The market in this region is expected to showcase significant growth during the forecast period owing to the growing demand for air travel and the resultant increase in the number of airports.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the all-weather landing system segments based on the application.

“To avoid challenges in flight operations, FAA has shifted from a radio-based navigation to a modern GPS system, NextGen. The new system allows precise and better-organized airplane approaches that result in quicker travel times with fewer delays. Besides, the aircraft would require lesser fuel and make limited noise during take-off and landing. Also, NextGen enables pilots to get the precise location of nearby air traffic, which increases safety and significantly reduces mid-air collisions. Its GPS radar updates an airplane’s location in a fraction of a second whereas the radio-based radar would take approximately 12 seconds,” says Avimanyu Basu, Lead Analyst, Aerospace & Defense, Technavio Research.

The ILS segment accounted for around 89% of the overall market revenue to become the key revenue generating vertical of the global market during 2015. The ILS segment dominated the global all-weather landing system market owing to the its operational reliability and lower demand for aircraft instrumentation that could also be used by other navigation systems at the airport. Furthermore, ILS is highly durable against atmospheric disturbances.

The key vendors in the global all-weather landing system market include Honeywell, NEC, Rockwell Collins, Thales, and Universal Avionics. Government organizations such as ICAO, IATA, FAA, EASA, CASA, and EU certify the landing systems of every vendor. They encourage the use of such systems as they enhance flight safety as well as improve landing and navigation of aircraft. As a result, vendors invest in creating new, cost-efficient, and effective precision approach landing systems for use by the airports, globally.
