Sonobuoy: Key market research findings
- Shift towards long life sonobuoy
- Increased use of lightweight systems
Technavio has released a new market research report on the global sonobuoy market, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 6% between 2016 and 2020. Sonobuoys are crucial components of naval forces and underwater acoustic research institutions which are deployed by ships and aircraft to extract information about hostile submarines. These are also installed for environmental monitoring uses and marine mammal research. The demand for sonobuoy is expected to grow during the forecast period owing to rise in procurement of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems by countries such China, the US, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The Americas dominate the global market for sonobuoys, and is expected to hold around 61% of eth total market share by 2020. Much of this region’s growth comes from the mammoth investments in submarine research.
The new industry research report from Technavio discusses in detail the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.
“Owing to increase in regional conflicts, naval forces are shifting towards new and advanced sonobuoy systems and technologies. They are upgrading sensors, improving navigation and data analysis competencies to make their military operations up to mark. For instance, extended life sonobuoys, with thermistor strings, measure ocean temperatures at static depths but from different positions in a given area. They include hydrophones to monitor the altering ambient noise field as well,” says Abhay Singh, Lead Analyst, Aerospace & Defense, Technavio Research
Sonobuoys are either passive or active sonars that are placed in the sea to extract information from various sound sources. The naval forces use these systems through low-frequency analysis and ranging (LOFAR), and directional frequency and ranging (DIFAR). Pyrotechnic squibs or high-pressure gas bottles are some of the key sources to generate energy to eject the sonobuoy into the waters. Of late, the global naval forces are upgrading the technologies and system for modern warfare capabilities. One such technology is lightweight sonobuoy dispenser system deployed by helicopters. It is also designed vertically, and can carry various types of sonobuoys.
The key players in the global sonobuoy market are General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada, RADIXON, Sparton, Thales and Ultra Electronics. The market is characterized by the presence of diversified international and small-and medium-sized vendors. Competition in this market is expected to intensify during the forecast period with increase in product extensions, technological innovations, and the number of contracts and mergers and acquisitions. Analysts expect that over the next four years the global players will grow organically by acquiring smaller players.
