TechNavioTM “ Infiniti Research™s market intelligence platform, presented on Bluetooth: Market Perspective on Automotive Wireless Technologies in Asia. The talk focused on the current and future market potential of Bluetooth in cars for OEMs, and aftermarket for the Asian industry. It also highlighted that Bluetooth is expected to become the key wireless technology in automotive applications, since it has a wider application opportunity; offers better performance, security and quality, and ease of use; and has low power requirements.
By 2015, electronics will cover 40% of the cost of a car. The global market for Bluetooth chips in the automotive sector in 2008 was about 31 million units, including both factory fitted and aftermarket sales. Asia had a small chunk of this market in 2008, comprising 4 million units. The total cars sold worldwide in 2008 were 65 million units, out of which Asia sold 18 million cars. There were only 1 million cars sold in 2008 in Asia that had factory fitted Bluetooth applications; opening an untapped market potential of 17 million cars.
Some of the main applications of Bluetooth technology in automotives are hands-free communication, in-car entertainment, navigation, and remote car diagnostics. In Asia, hands-free communication and in-car entertainment systems are the main uses of Automotive Bluetooth technology. Use of Bluetooth for navigation and remote car diagnostics is still at a nascent stage.
The factors that may drive the Bluetooth market in Automotive sector in Asia are high growth rate of car sales, higher adoption rate of Bluetooth enabled mobile phones, declining cost of Bluetooth enables devices, and increasing applications. Some of the factors that may influence the market negatively are compatibility and interoperability issues, low awareness, and still expensive devices.
