Top 3D Camera Vendors

esports industry

Earlier this year, Intel unveiled its RealSense 3D depth camera for smartphones. The camera contains three lenses—one is standard 2D, one infrared, and one infrared laser projector. The infrared part helps RealSense determine distance between objects, separating the objects from background layers, and allowing for better object, facial, and gesture recognition when compared to traditional cameras.

Since the camera was released, many tablet and computer manufacturers like ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, and Acer have started incorporating the technology in their products.

Beyond the novelty value of a 3D camera, there are a huge number of applications for depth sensing cameras, including:

  • 3D scanning for detailed 3D printouts
  • Measuring distance in pictures: The Dell Venue 8 7000 tablet has RealSense snapshot camera, which can actually calculate the distance between two points captured within the photo frame
  • Gaming with body controls
  • Object avoidance: The camera can measure distance and avoid collision by adjusting the course accordingly.

While Intel’s product is certainly a game-changer, there are a number of other key vendors that are also expected to make big contributions to the market over the forecast period, and help the global 3D camera market grow at a CAGR of 41.31% from 2014-2019.
