Global Aluminum Crankcase Market – New Market Research Report

Renewable energy

The global aluminum crankcase market was valued at almost 54 million units in 2016 and is expected to reach around 76 million units by 2021, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on the global aluminum crankcase market, under its powertrain portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends and offers an analysis of key vendors like Thyssenkrupp, Sandvik, Nemak, and Linama.

According to Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead analyst for powertrain research at Technavio, “Over the past decade, diesel engines have gone through aggressive downsizing of upto 40%. More stringent regulations regarding CO₂ emissions will see this trend move to petrol engines. Consumers are willing to drive more fuel-efficient cars but not at the cost of engine performance.”

OEMs are trying to reduce the weight of the vehicles to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicles. As there are more stringent norms in Europe, European OEMs are keen to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. The downsizing of engines is done by replacing a larger engine by a smaller one along with a lower displacement.

Growing application of aluminum in diesel engine blocks

Though cast iron has been used in diesel engines for a long time, with the growing implementation of lightweighting measures, OEMs are pushed toward using aluminum since it reduces the engine weight. Engine blocks for gasoline engines are commonly made from aluminum and with the increasing growth of aluminum alloys, the application of aluminum blocks will grow in diesel engines. Most premium cars, such as BMW and Mercedes, are equipped with aluminum blocks.

Development of modular engine families

The development of the modular engine families by OEMs and the utilization of lightweight construction of components are upcoming trends in the automotive market that will also favor growth of the aluminum crankcase market. In April 2016, Volkswagen launched its next generation TSI turbocharged petrol engine, a new modular petrol engine likely to be used in the upcoming T-Cross and T-Roc SUVs. The EA2111 TSI Evo range, a modular family of Volkswagen, offers more power, lower emissions, and provides better fuel economy compared with the previous family of engines.
