What is a Capacitive Touch Screen and What is it Used for?

Telematics

In October, Cypress Semiconductor Corporation, the market leader in capacitive touch-sensing, announced it is nearing the shipment of its 1 billionth CapSense capacitive touch-sensing controller, which have already replaced over 4.5 billion mechanical buttons in a variety of different electronic devices.

In response to this milestone, Hassane El-Khoury, Executive Vice-President of Cypress’s Programmable Systems Division said, “Cypress’s reliable, robust CapSense solutions have continued to build a significant market advantage—strengthened through innovative world-class features such as proximity sensing, water tolerance, passive stylus support, and gloved-finger sensing. Equally important, Cypress offers a complete design ecosystem that makes implementing CapSense solutions fast and easy.”

A capacitive IC that is used for touch screen functions electronic devices are known as touch controller integrated circuits (ICs). These touch controller ICs provide a high-level user interface in display-based electronic devices. The significance of touch controller ICs is gradually increasing with the increase in the penetration of smartphones and tablets, which means that manufacturers are rapidly adopting touch controller ICs and driving market growth at a whopping CAGR of 31.5 percent for the 2012-2016 period.

A large reason why touch controller ICs are becoming such a sought-after piece of technology is their extreme versatility.  This has in turn increased the popularity of touch panel displays, which use touch controller ICs.

Touch panels have become ubiquitous because of their ease of use, in terms of device interface for automobile monitors, digital cameras, MP3/PMP, portable gaming consoles, home appliances, industry automation, ATMs and printers, just to name a few. All these applications are expected to adopt touch controller ICs, thereby propelling the growth of the market during forecast period.

In addition, like any technology today, the fast growing technological advancement in the design and development of touch controller ICs is one of the major factors driving the growth of the Global Touch Controller IC market. Vendors are manufacturing touch controller ICs primarily to improve the user interface in electronic products.

These technologically advanced ICs are designed with sophisticated advanced functionality that can detect even a minute touch within a high response time, enhancing user responsiveness. Additionally, vendors are also trying to reduce the size of these ICs with the deployment of advanced technologies in the manufacturing process.

These technological advancements have already led to the development of multi-touch screens in electronic products, which is a major trends witnessed in the Global Touch Controller IC market. The implementation of multi-touch technology in touch screen solutions is likely to enhance user experience by enabling consumers to operate the product with multiple touch points on the screen. This gives an added advantage to touch screen solutions which has in turn driven vendors to focus more on the development of this multi-touch technology for consumer electronics, which should help drive market growth in the years to come.
