Top Companies in the Voice over Mobile Broadband (VOMBB) Market

The Voice over Mobile Broadband (VOMBB) market consists of some of the biggest telecom operators such as AT&T Mobility, MetroPCS, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, LG Uplus, and StarHub. But with the increase in penetration by smartphones and the increase in mobile data traffic, a number of small players are entering into the marketplace. With the deployment of HSPA and LTE networks, it is expected that some new telecom operators will also enter the market.

The global market is witnessing increased mergers and acquisitions. For instance, in 2014, Taqua acquired Kineto Wireless, a pioneer in providing VoWi-Fi services. Competition is cutthroat among big players such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless to provide voice services. Verizon provides a 4G LTE network, which cover almost 97 percent of the US and which is 10 times faster than the older 3G network. Verizon and AT&T have 103 million and 85 million total wireless subscribers, respectively.

Hence, initiatives to grab more and more customers have led to price wars between the two players. Initially, T-Mobile slashed prices and added 1.5 million new customers; subsequently, Verizon Wireless also followed the same strategy and added 1.5 million post-paid subscribers.

Some players form strategic partnerships with each other to gain a competitive advantage. For instance, Chinese vendor ZTE cooperated with German mobile network provider E-Plus in the deployment of IP multimedia services-based core network infrastructure. Some new players are also preparing to launch their own VoLTE network. For instance, Du, a leading telecom operator in the UAE, is preparing to launch a VoLTE network by the end of this year.
