Many pure-play SaaS-based MDM vendors are entering the market and competing with large open-source vendors. This results in the presence of a large number of vendors and, therefore, market fragmentation.
Currently the market has more than 200 vendors, which creates opportunities for M&A. This also helps vendors innovate and develop features to provide an all-round customer experience, improve supply chain operations, and increase business efficiency.
The growth rate will decrease gradually as a result of commoditization and the competitive nature of the market. The cost of MDM is decreasing, forcing providers to add new features to the service in order to increase revenue.
As a result, vendors may shift their focus to EMM to align their requirements with those of end-users. For instance, an increase in the use of smartphones and tablets has forced vendors to embed security applications in MDM.
Since the BYOD policy sometimes has to operate on many platforms, there may be instances where the functionalities will not work. This is a hurdle for MDM vendors, as they can only offer applications based on API, which in turn hinders the growth of the market and limits the scope of the service.
In order to tackle the fierce competition in the market, vendors are forced to improvise on pre-existing functionalities, keeping operational prices in check. These innovations include:
- Containerization: Customized apps can create partitions on employees’ personal mobile devices in a way that ensures a secure environment. This will help in data security even when the mobile device doesn’t have an unlock key, as the container cannot be opened without the correct passcode. The data stored in the container can be shared within business applications. Moreover, if the device is lost IT can clean the container.
- MAM: The delivery and administration of enterprise software to employees’ smartphones and tablets. It assists in software delivery, licensing, configuration, and usage tracking.
- ECM: Helps in sharing files and business data, which streamlines the flow of information within an enterprise.
