Inked for Life. Or is it?

Just when you thought that your choice of books, clothes, and the music was enough to define your personality, comes the trend of getting tattooed ‘aka’ inked. An extension of one’s personality and innermost belief system, nothing speaks out and loud about you, then the way a tattoo does. And perhaps, therefore, they say, ‘think before you get inked.’ But how many of us are so sure about our thoughts and ideas?

From inking the name of now ‘not so special someone’ to thinking that the tattoo no longer defines you, there are many who just want to get rid of the ink. Thus, though on the one hand, the global demand for being tattooed is going crazy, parallelly the market for body tattoo removal too is growing at a fast pace. Market researchers at Technavio expect the global body tattoo removal market to record a CAGR of close to 16% by 2021. Guess many are not happy with that ink on their bodies.

Temporary thoughts, permanent tattoos

There are many factors which go into choosing the pain of getting tattooed. Similarly, there are an equal number of reasons for why one wants to erase the ink. While a few feel, their tattoo has faded beyond recognition, some feel it will subtly hinder their career growth, and then there are many who just want to get over their past which the tattoo reminds. Also with better technologies, it has become a lot easier and less painful to remove the tattoo.

Until 2016, the United States was the biggest contributor to the global market of body tattoo removal, closely followed by countries in the EMEA and the APAC region. Interestingly, the growing market of medical tourism seems to be the trigger for growing demand for tattoo removal services in the APAC region. Also as the economy of this region has grown at an immense pace, there is a major section of the population which has high disposable income. Thus, experiments, like getting a tattoo and then working on its removal, is a regular process over here.

Laser technology – Racing out the Ink

Traditionally, tattoo removal lasers or Q-switch lasers were being used to remove the body tattoo. But with the new generation technology named PicoWay laser, it has become way easier to remove the ink in a much lesser time. Also, this method is less painful, involves fewer treatment sessions, and is safer than the Q-switch lasers.
