We already know data centers worldwide are getting bigger, but it turns out they’re also getting greener.
So much so that the Global Green Data Center Market is growing at a CAGR of 31.27 percent from 2014-2018.
A major driver behind this growth is the innovative new designs that companies are seeking out, in order to promote cost-effective operations. In many cases, the greening of data centers is just a happy side effect of the push for higher productivity.
High Productivity Data Centers Heating Up- Literally
Demanding so much from data centers, and putting so much computing power in one place means cooling solutions tend to top the list of priorities for data center service providers. Keeping servers at an optimal temperature is absolutely essential for the end-user’s business operations, and the survival of the data center itself.
Artificial cooling isn’t cheap (just think of what air conditioning does to you hydro bill in the summer) so naturally, data center service providers are looking for alternative cooling solutions.
Centers are increasingly being reorganized and redesigned to allow more space for air circulation, and therefore better cooling. Some large companies are even setting up their centers in areas where the average temperature is lower than the temperatures of data centers, so that the air can act as a natural cooling solution. This is good news for the companies’ bottom line, as well as for the environment.
Rapid Advances in Technology Posing a Challenge to Market Growth
But as much as there is a lot of motivation for organizations to update their data centers for more environmentally friendly operations, these technological advancements might not be best for the market as a whole.
It turns out that many organizations are actually delaying the adoption of new technology because of the possibility of something bigger and better coming along in the near future, and a lack of tested solutions.
“Several developments in power conservation have increased the productivity of data centers and as a result of new technologies in the market, companies and data center service providers are delaying adopting new technology as they are looking for tested solutions,” say senior TechNavio analysts.
“This quest has derailed the adoption of new technology and is a major challenge for the growth of Global Green Data Center market.”
But even as some companies sit on their laurels and wait for the next big thing in data centers to come along, growing cooperation between vendors in the green data centers market will be a trend that contributes to market growth over the projected period.
Companies look for vendors that can provide end-to-end solutions, and as a result, vendors are working together to do just that. A number of vendors are coming together to provide services, equipment provisioning, computing resource allocation and security services for end-users in an effort to become a one-stop data center shop.
