Demographic Shift in Tablet Display Market Targets Younger Generation

On October 3rd, and independent regulator and competition authority for the UK Communications industry called Ofcom released a report stating that from 2012 until now, household ownership of a tablet has more than doubled, currently sitting at 51 percent. Furthermore, the use of tablets at home has tripled to 42 percent among youth aged 5 to 15 since 2012.

Tablets aren’t just increasing in popularity with the younger generation, they are one of the fastest growing mobile computing devices worldwide.  The high demand for Apple’s iPad and the large market growth potential has prompted other leading mobile and computer manufacturers to enter the Global Tablet Displays Market which is expected to drive growth at a CAGR of 49 percent for the 2012-2016 period.

There is also an increased demand for high-performance devices with reliable and highly portable computing platforms from end-users that support diverse connectivity options such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G/LTE. All these requirements can be met by tablets which make them more efficient than laptops.

Tablets are also becoming popular in other sectors such as Hospitality and Government, which has escalated the significance of tablets in terms of their versatility. Therefore, the continuous increase in the adoption of tablets is expected to foster the demand for tablet displays, which in turn is expected to contribute to market growth.

The growth of the Global Tablet Display market is comprised mainly by following segments:

  • LCD-based Tablet Display
  • AMOLED-based Tablet Display

The LCD-based Tablet Display segment accounted the majority of market revenue mainly due to an increasing demand for large screen size. Consumers these days prefer large screen sizes over small sized screens, such as those on a mobile device. Since a large screen size was not feasible for other display technologies, there was a high adoption of LCD-based tablet displays.

Several tablet manufacturers are also adopting AMOLED displays for their devices which is very beneficial for tablet manufacturers as such displays help reduce the overall weight of tablet devices and also help reduce their overall cost of production. As a result of such factors, the market is expected to witness an increasing adoption of AMOLED displays during the forecast period.

Major players in the market like Apple, Samsung, LG, Sharp, Chimei Innolux and AU Optronics have invested a large portion of their revenue in their sales and distribution channels. As a result, there have been drastic increase in the number of distribution networks of tablets in the past few years which triggered a spike in tablet sales in the past few years.  Overall, the increasing number of tablet sales channels combined with a surge in demand are expected to have a large impact on the growth of the Global Tablet Display market in the years to come.
