Could PROFINET Eventually Outshine TCP/IP in the Global Ethernet Market?

Digital Content Market

Ethernet is one of the most important network protocols available universally and independently for all common operating systems. IT supports a large number of devices and expansion. In conjunction with TCP/IP Ethernet, it has become the dominant standard in the industrial world.

The system requires low-cost components, which has added to the spread of Ethernet TCP/IP. Many automation devices can be accessed through web browsers, which is made possible by Ethernet TCP/IP. There are many advantages of Ethernet, such as high data transmission rates, easy integration with existing networks, and a wide range of services and interfaces.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Global Industrial Ethernet Market was dominated by Ethernet TCP/IP technology. This segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.4 percent for the 2013-2018 period.

The second most popular technology was Ethernet/IP, which is also expected to witness impressive growth at a CAGR of 12.21 percent.

PROFINET was the third most used technology in the Global Industrial Ethernet market. While PROFINET sat in third spot in 2013, it is expected to witness the largest growth out of all technologies in the market, growing at a CAGR of almost 13 percent through to 2018.

PROFINET is the most advanced system for networking of production assets (sensors, actuators, sub-systems, and production units) and equipment such as PLCs, DCS, and enterprise-wide IT systems.

It offers advantages over conventional Ethernet connections. For example, conventional Ethernet connections do not allow for the real-time operation which is required by automation. In contrast PROFINET does allow for this service. Also, conventional Ethernet is not able to withstand harsh industrial environments while PROFINET provides protection against harsh environmental conditions.

Some of the other advantages of PROFINET at input/output level are:

  • Highly scalable architecture
  • Access to field devices over the architecture
  • Maintenance and servicing from anywhere
  • Lower costs for production/quality data monitoring
What Changed?

The main factor driving the growth of the Global Industrial Ethernet market is the need companies have to reduce their capital and operational expenses. The use of Ethernet in connecting LANs to MANs and WANs helps service providers reduce their capital and operating expenses. Ethernet technology is popular among IT professionals as it has been frequently used to interconnect LANs in enterprises.

In addition, because professionals are comfortable working with Ethernet technology, companies do not need to invest heavily in training them. Almost all types of networking equipment already have Ethernet, making the Ethernet interface cost efficient. MANs and LANs normally employ shared equipment from an internet provider, thereby reducing the overall cost of providing Ethernet services.
