Automotive throttle-by-wire (TBW) system: Key market research findings

  • APAC dominates the market geographically
  • LCV segment accounts for a majority of the market share
  • Key vendors – Continental, Curtis-Wright, Delphi, Denso, and Hella

Technavio’s market research analysts predict the global automotive TBW system market to grow at a CAGR of around 5% between 2016 and 2020. The improved vehicular throttle response during uphill driving brought about by the TBW system is fueling its adoption across the globe. Depending on the road inclination, the TBW system driven by the ECU automatically factors in the gradient to augment throttle response, which may be significantly larger than that possible by a normal pedal depression of the same magnitude in level driving conditions. This improvement is expected to increase the adoption rates of TBW systems, especially in hilly regions where comparatively larger valve openings are desirable, without an equivalent pedal input. During 2015, the global automotive TBW market was dominated by APAC with a market share of around 50%. The rise in sales of new automobiles equipped with TBW in India, China, Japan, and Indonesia will contribute to the growth of the automotive TBW system market in APAC during the forecast period.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the automotive TBW segments based on the vehicle type.

“There have been several tests on hybrid vehicles with TBW systems based on intelligent-integration fuzzy proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controllers. Some of these tests used an advanced embedded chip. The results of these tests imply that the control response of the electronic throttle system is rapid, errors are minimal, and the hardware and software designs of the control system fully conform to the requirement of engine control for the hybrid vehicle,” says Siddarth Jaiswal, Lead Analyst, Automotive, Technavio Research.

By 2020, the LCV segment will account for around 36% of the overall market share to become the key revenue generating segment of the global automotive TBW market. According to our analysts, a majority of automobile sales over the next four years will be in this market segment. The introduction of stringent legislations that mandate the reduction of emission  to conserve the environment will fuel the adoption of TBW systems across the LCV segment.

The key vendors in the global automotive TBW system market include Continental, Curtis-Wright, Delphi, Denso, and Hella. Since the inception of the TBW technology and automotive electronics in particular, many companies have entered the space in a staggered fashion. Those who entered earlier have naturally developed larger global supply chains, which, in turn, helps them to win the end-consumer acquisition battle.
