Respiratory protection equipment: Key market research findings

  • North America dominates the market geographically
  • Healthcare industry accounts for a majority of the demand for respiratory protection equipment
  • Key vendors – Avon Protection Systems, 3M, Honeywell, and MSA Safety

The market research analysts at Technavio predict the global market for respiratory protection equipment to grow at a CAGR of around 7% between 2016 and 2020. The growth of this market can be accredited to the increase in hydraulic fracturing activity. The hydraulic fracturing process involves pumping large quantities of the mixture containing water, frac sand, and chemicals into the ground to create small fractures in the impermeable rock formation and release oil and gas. This process can expose well site workers to respirable silica dust, resulting in developing a high risk of silicosis, which is a form of occupational lung disease. During 2015, North America dominated the global respiratory protection equipment market by accounting for more than 41% of the overall market revenue. The growth of the market in this region during the forecast period will be fueled primarily by the extensive use of hydraulic fracturing for the production of natural gas.

The new market research report from Technavio presents a breakdown and analysis of the respiratory protection equipment segments based on the end-user.

“The market is currently witnessing intensified competition among manufacturers. The recent increase in the demand for single-source suppliers of RPE from the markets in North America and Western Europe has forced large manufacturers to expand their product portfolio. The product portfolio expansion by various vendors has increased the pressure on manufacturers of specialized and single-type RPE to lower the prices to maintain their market share,” says Abhay Sinha, Lead Analyst, New Coverage, Technavio Research.

In 2015, the healthcare industry accounted for almost 26% of the overall market revenue to become the key revenue generating segment of the global market for respiratory protection equipment. This segment of the market will experience the fastest growth during the forecast period owing to the increase in epidemics in recent years and the subsequent rise in the demand for RPE. Healthcare personnel include staff that provides housekeeping, engineering, clerical, dietary, engineering, security, or maintenance services. This personnel is directly or indirectly exposed to pathogens that cause aerosol transmissible diseases. These diseases are transmitted when infectious agents suspended or present in the air are inhaled by people.

The key vendors in the global respiratory protection equipment market include Avon Protection Systems, 3M, Honeywell, and MSA Safety. The focus on R&D activities and investments by the market leaders ensure that product innovation is given priority. Although the top-five vendors cater to the majority of the market, private labels market PPE at a lower price in an attempt to use sales volumes to gain market share. This has led to the entry of several new vendors in the global respiratory protection market. However, these new vendors are limited to producing equipment that requires low technical knowledge and expertise.
