Global UAV Landing Gear Market Marked by the Emergence of Alternative Energy-powered UAVs through 2020: Technavio

Renewable energy

The global UAV landing gear market was valued at approximately 5% during 2015 and is anticipated to post a CAGR of around 13% between 2016 and 2020.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on UAV landing gear to its aerospace components portfolio. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global UAV landing gear market during the forecast period 2016-2020. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Aero Telemetry, CIRCOR Aerospace, Fiber Dynamics, GE Aviation, and Héroux-Devtek.

In terms of geographical analysis, APAC will be the fastest-growing region in the market, registering a CAGR of around 19% over the forecast period. The increasing initiatives for indigenous aerospace platforms will result in the development of home-grown UAVs and military drones in the APAC region in the coming years.

The automation systems involving computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing, or computer-aided engineering are gaining popularity in UAV designs and are capable of reducing development cycle time. These tools employ a virtual prototyping approach that analyses and ensures the optimal functionality of the landing gears before their actual production. The advancements in computer-aided technologies will help the UAV component manufacturers to design and deliver efficient landing systems for UAVs,” says Arushi Thakur, industry expert at Technavio for research on aerospace components.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Technological advancements

In recent years, several technological advancements have enabled UAVs to overcome critical deficiencies, including navigational issues and automated operations. UAVs have become an integral part of mainstream military applications which has propelled manufacturers to focus on R&D and to minimize the operating costs.  Commercial UAV suppliers are offering small-UAVs that are used in agricultural, aerial photography, and data collection applications. In May 2016, a global logistics services provider, United Parcel Service entered into a partnership with a US-based medical delivery services provider, Zipline, to initiate aerial transport services using UAVs for healthcare supplies in Rwanda. Such innovative approaches for deploying UAVs in commercial and civil applications have encouraged the landing gear suppliers to develop and offer subsystems that can support multi-terrain operations. The government agencies are making investments in the research activities to enhance the existing landing gear systems of UAVs that are used in military and other defense applications. For instance, a US-based public research university is developing a robotic landing gear systems for helicopters, which can be used on both manned and unmanned rotorcraft and will provide the operators to land helicopters on broken or uneven terrains while maintaining a high degree of safety standard.

Increasing demand for composite-based landing gears

The lighter weight of commercial and civil UAVs allows them to remain flying for an extended duration.  The lightweight landing gears play a very crucial role in improving the endurance and flight range of a UAV. In May 2016, the German Aerospace Center demonstrated a solar UAV installed with a redundant landing hardware to maintain the lightweight of the UAV. During the test, the UAV was able to able to fly for a greater range with increased payload reaching an altitude of over 12,000 meters. The use of carbon composite materials in UAV landing gears has also gained importance as they ensure reduced weight and enhanced service life, thereby minimizing the overall maintenance cost per landing. Recently, a Netherland-based company, Fokker Technologies, entered into a partnership agreement with the General Atomics for developing composite-based landing gears and other associated subsystems for Predator B MQ-9 Reaper UAVs.

Growing indigenous production of military UAVs across the globe

Many emerging nations in South America, APAC, and the Middle East have prioritized the deployment of UAVs, specifically in military applications. In January 2016, DRDO raised a request for development partners for the design and manufacture of landing gear systems and components for its Rustom-II MALE UAVs, which are scheduled for its first flight in November 2016. The use of UAVs by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), offshore surveillance search and rescue, and anti-piracy missions have increased substantially and are anticipated to drive the market for UAV components in India during the forecast period. Such developments in emerging markets will drive the local and international aerospace component manufacturers to invest in diversifying their manufacturing facilities, and will propel them to improve the existing production capabilities to cater the growing demand of the military UAV market.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are ACP Composites, CESA, UAV Factory, and Whippany Actuation Systems.
