Competitive vendor landscape

The global UAV battery market is extremely competitive, where the vendors compete on the basis of cost, product quality, reliability, and aftermarket service. To sustain themselves in the intense competitive scenario, it is important for the vendors to offer cost-effective and high-quality UAV batteries equipped with latest technologies and materials. The key vendors dominate the market in terms of in-house manufacturing capabilities, product offerings, global footprint network, R&D investments, newer technologies, and strong client base. Factors such as global economic recovery, the growth in the aerospace and defense sector, and increased research activities have created ample opportunities for the UAV manufacturers and their subsystems vendors to compete and grow.

The growth of the vendors in this market significantly depends on the market conditions, government support, and industry development. Vendors should focus on extending their geographic presence and reviving their domestic demand to accomplish sustainable growth. They can also drive their profits by practicing efficient manufacturing ways that reduce production expenses and mitigate the associated risks. Vendors need to develop advanced UAV batteries and stay abreast of the emerging UAV technologies, which would affect the continuing competitiveness of their product lines in the market,” says Arush Thakur, an industry expert, at Technavio for research on aerospace components.

Top five vendors in the UAV battery market space

Ballard Power Systems

Ballard Power Systems deals with the development and commercialization of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Besides battery chargers, the company also offers power solutions for enhanced reliability and endurance, which is used in UAVs, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). The company executes its business operations primarily through the power products and technology solutions. For FY2015, it generated revenue worth $56 million and has made investments of more than $16 million in research activities.  In 2016, the company’s subsidiary, Protonex, delivered a prototype PEM to Boeing, for use in its ScanEagle UAV.

Key products: FCgen-1020ACS fuel cell stack, FCgen-micro fuel cell stack, and Protonex portable fuel cells.

Cella Energy

Cella Energy focuses on the development of advanced lightweight hydrogen storage material, which has the potential of safely releasing large quantities of hydrogen when heated to high temperatures. The company works independently as well as in partnership with aerospace and unmanned aerial systems manufacturers, to develop bespoke power systems, that have around three times the specific energy compared to Li-ion batteries. Technavio’s market research analysts have predicted that the hydrogen storage material could be further used to produce a new source of low-emission transport fuel, in the long term. The company develops batteries for UAVs that are used across several applications including agricultural monitoring, security operations, search and rescue operations, coastguard duties, fisheries enforcement, environmental audits/research, infrastructural surveys, and aerial filming.

Key products: Cartridge systems, Flowing pellet systems, and Static pellet systems

Denchi Power

Denchi Power supplies batteries and chargers to the defense industry for the military radios, vision systems, manned military vehicles, UAVs, UUVs and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). It also manufactures batteries for other sectors including security, medical, and oil and gas. The use of UAVs has increased significantly within the military sector. The company provides 6T Li-ion batteries that incorporate high capacity cells and are managed by integrated control electronics. They are used for propulsion on smaller UAVs and also as an emergency backup on larger UAVs. Denchi Power fabricates a broad range of batteries, chargers, and accessories for markets that require high reliability and robust product design.

Key products: BB2590 Smart batteries, Sparrowhawk batteries, and VPT (VHF portable transceiver) batteries

Sion Power

Sion Power develops high-energy rechargeable batteries based on the elements like lithium and sulfur. It primarily focusses on offering batteries for running the electric vehicles, UAVs, UUVs, and USVs. The company manufactured the Licerion battery technology that significantly improves the capacity and cycle life of rechargeable lithium batteries. This battery has enabled a new breed of high altitude aircraft. Some of the other tactical benefits of the Licerion batteries include reduction of battery weight by 60%, longer missions, increased payloads, and minimized stress on the soldiers carrying the man-portable units.

Key products: Licerion batteries and Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries

Tadiran Batteries

Tadiran Batteries designs, develops, manufactures, supplies, and promotes lithium batteries across the globe. It provides batteries and power solutions for the industrial, automotive, defense, and medical sectors. The company fabricates batteries with unique features that have been used successfully for targeting devices of firearms and UAVs. These batteries offer long shelf life and high energy resistance, which can withstand harsh climatic conditions and are more reliable than other lithium batteries. Also, these batteries are cost-effective.

Key products: Lithium/thionyl chloride (LTC) batteries and Tadiran lithium metal oxide (TLM) batteries
