The top three revenue contributing product segments are discussed below:

Global healthcare plastic bottles market

In 2015, plastic bottles accounted for around 15% of the global healthcare packaging market and is expected to grow at a steady rate during forecast period. Plastic bottles are most commonly used for the packaging of pharmaceutical drugs and will remain the most widely used packaging type for oral medicines, which are distributed in huge amount to pharmacy stores. Apart from this, they will also continue have extensive applications in OTC medicines sold in tablet and capsule form of 50 or more. The two factors that make plastic bottles good container of medicines are, that they do not infect the content inside and the composition of products remain unchanged even in the changing external conditions. These bottles are made from rigid plastic HDF polymers and can be customized as per the requirements of the pharmaceutical companies. Different bottles are made of different resins and varies in size, colors, and shapes.  Besides this, plastic bottles are also made with additives, which may contain antioxidants, impact modifiers, lubricants, stabilizers, and plasticizers.

Owing to the excellent barrier properties, superior plastics such as HDPE, polyester, PP, and cyclic olefins are increasingly being used as raw materials in the healthcare packaging products. HDPE is extremely suitable for making plastic bottles as it is flexible, lightweight, and corrosion resistant. Besides this, polyester is being used increasingly as it is non-allergenic, inexpensive, and durable and has greater dimensional stability,” says Sharan Raj, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on packaging.

Global healthcare caps and closures market

The caps and closures accounted for around 11% of the global healthcare packaging market in 2015. Caps and closures are important components of packaging which prevents products from leaking, aid in tamper resistant packaging, and are compliant to regulatory authorities such as the FDA. Apart from these, they are also used in child-resistant packaging for OTC drugs as they require closure less than 20 millimeters in diameter. Made of a variety of plastic resins and rubber, there are several types of closure that includes threaded ribbed closures, smooth wall closures, dropper tip caps, orifice reducers, spray mist fitments, snap caps, extended dispensing tips, and roll-on closures. Caps and closures are sold to pharma companies in minimum quantities as they are low cost and are available in various types.

Global healthcare blister market

In 2015, blister packages accounted for around 11% of the global healthcare packaging market. Blister packages can be categorized into two types that include lidding elements and forming films.  Lidding elements are made from laminate of paper and foils, printed foils, or in some cases, plastic, while forming films are mostly made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Unlike conventional modes of packaging, these packs increase the shelf life of products, maintains integrity of product, trace evidence in case of tampers, patient compliance and have very less chances of misuse. Apart from these, it even saves cost of almost 10% to 50% in the type of packaging done in case of OTC drugs. Even though the selection and recommendation of pharmaceutical products are done by medical practitioners, the drug manufacturers must select packaging by keeping in mind the ease of use. The highest contributor to this market is Europe where more than 85% of solid drugs use blister packaging. It is expected that blister packaging will gain traction in the market due to its expanded label content, high visibility, and implicit track, and trace features.
