Increased Application in Aquaculture to Propel the Demand for Fish Oil Products in the American Market

Renewable energy

The fish oil products market in the US was valued at around $519 million in 2015 and is expected to reach almost $567 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio’s has announced the launch of its latest market research report on fish oil products in the US for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis, which is an integral part of the food portfolio, discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the fish oil products market in the US during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Barlean’s, FMC, Nordic Naturals, Nutrifynn Caps, Omega Protein, and Wiley’s Finest.

“There is an upsurge in the demand for food products containing unsaturated fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated fats, cannot be manufactured by the body and hence should be supplemented through a healthy, balanced diet. These are present in foods including fish, nuts, and plant-based oils such as canola oil and sunflower oils. Out of these, fish-based products are the most abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which are polyunsaturated fatty acids,” says Manjunath Reddy, a lead analyst at Technavio for food.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Preference for oils with high concentration of EPA and DHA

EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that help maintain cardiac health, brain and eye functioning, immune system, and others. Fish oil contains more than 60% combined concentration of EPA and DHA. These long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are far more potent when compared to short-chain fatty acids like alpha linoleic acid (ALA) that are found in plant sources such as flax seeds. This is propelling the demand for EPA and DHA and products that contain them. Higher concentrations enable smaller and more palatable dosage forms, making fish oil sources more lucrative for use in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. Smaller quantities of fish oil in products or supplements are ideal to provide the required nutritive value in a single-serve dosage form.

Development of aquaculture

The use of fish oil to make hydrogenated margarine is slowly transitioning with its increasing application in aquaculture. Continued growth of the aquaculture sector will necessitate the increased use of fish oil and propel the demand for fish oil products in the global market. Federal legislation has outlined government support and policy for aquaculture development in the US by declaring a national aquaculture policy to encourage development. The legislation has established a federal interagency aquaculture coordinating group within the Office of Science and Technology Policy, which operates as the Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture (JSA).

Demand for fish oil products from athletes

Fish oil works effectively in improving endurance and easing muscular pain, especially for athletes. Fish oil supplements decrease the severity of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) in athletes when consumed on a regular basis. EIB occurs when the lower airways narrow and is the result of overtraining or vigorous exercise. Athletes are prone to bodily wear and tear — a result of long, strenuous exercise — and this influences their recuperation time and performance. Omega-3-rich fish oil helps reduce inflammation after exercise.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Abundant Health Labs, BodyVega Nutrition, Captek Softgel International, Crocker’s Fish Oil, Daybrook Fisheries, General Nutrition Centers, Marine Ingredients, Nature Made, OTH Health, Puritan’s Pride, and The Infinity Health Group.
