The global fixed satellite service (FSS) market was valued at almost $18 billion in 2015 and is expected to surpass $24 billion by 2020, says Technavio.
Technavio’s machine to machine (M2M) and connected devices portfolio has announced its latest market research report on FSS for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global FSS market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Embratel Star One, Eutelsat Communications, Intelsat, SES, SKY Perfect JSAT, Spacecom, Telesat, and Thaicom.
In terms of geographical analysis, EMEA will account for the largest share of the global market and is expected to post a revenue of more than $6 billion by 2020.
“FSS operators in the market are adopting business models that enable them to offer value-enhanced services such as uplink services, private networks through VSATs, teleports, and data multicasting to their customers. To offer such services, operators either enter into partnerships or purchase ground stations across the globe. Operators are also focusing on selling end-to-end solutions instead of transponder capacity,” says Abhishek Sharma, a lead analyst at Technavio for machine to machine (M2M) and connected devices.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.
Increasing demand for satellite TV and video transponders
The use of transponders in the television industry is on the rise. The rising adoption of HDTV in developed as well as developing countries is fueling the demand for FSS transponders in the global market. The increasing demand for satellite transponders is primarily driven by the growing demand for HTS that makes use of several small spot beams distributed across a particular service area to connect the satellite with small aperture earth stations at high data rates. In addition, the popularity of satellite TV is increasing the demand for high bandwidth-consuming 3D channels, especially in developed countries.
Increasing broadband and DTH subscriptions
APAC and MEA are currently witnessing an upsurge in the number of users subscribing to broadband services. This is prompting FSS operators in the market to launch new satellites or work towards the launch of their first satellite. The large subscriber base in countries such as China and India and the ever-changing regulatory and competitive landscape of the market is one of the fundamental drivers for the rise in the demand for FSS solutions in the APAC region. With the increase in confidence on service of satellite broadband despite the high data rates among consumers, operators, service providers, and space agencies like Eutelsat Tooway, HughesNet, Inmarsat Global Xpress, O3B, and ViaSat Exede are entering the satellite broadband market space.
Rise in demand for telecom/mobile backhaul
Mobile backhaul ensures the transportation of data and voice distributed network sites to the network core. The need for telecom backhaul has increased with the introduction of 3G and 4G networks, with an anticipated rise in data traffic over the next four years. A majority of the solutions currently available are unable to resolve backhaul related challenges, creating the need for a cost-effective high-speed mobile backhaul over satellite communication.
Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are ABS, APT Satellite Holdings, Arabsat Cyprus, AsiaSat, Azercosmos, China Satellite Communications (ChinaSatcom), Comtech Telecommunications, EchoStar Satellite Services, Es’hailSat, Hispasat, Indian Space Research Organization, Intersputnik, JSC Gazprom Space Systems, MEASAT Global, Nilesat, O3b Networks, Russia Satellite Communication, SingTel Optus, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting, and The Avanti Communications Group.
This research report includes an in-depth analysis, market shares, and sizes of the sub-segments and geography. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the key companies, including their market shares, business overview, and key financials. The market study also offers a detailed analysis of key drivers, challenges, and opportunities influencing this market.
