Laser defense eyewear market in EMEA

In 2015, EMEA accounted for around 38% of the global laser defense eyewear market. Technavio expects that the laser defense eyewear market will grow at a steady rate during the forecast period. There has been lot of developments in the laser weapons segment due to the rising tech-based threats. However, the use of laser weapons has caused serious problems for soldiers who are often exposed to the effects of laser. Several European countries are trying to adopt an effective protection solution to solve the issue and provide adequate protection for soldiers against lasers.

According to Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio, specializing in research on defense, “The severity of problems caused by lasers has led the UK Ministry of Defense (MOD) develop a new eyewear, which is designed to filter out a huge range of laser wavelengths. The government has also introduced a new prototype of spectacles, initially developed by a Glasgow-based company, Thin Film Solution. These safety eyeglasses are made of a complex structure that consists of a polycarbonate layer made from a distinct light-absorbing dye. When bonded to the lenses of the eyewear with a special coating, the eyewear becomes capable of reflecting or absorbing certain frequencies of wavelengths, providing more protection.”

Other countries implementing solutions against laser effects is Israel, in Middle East. Israel’s military forces use innovative qualities of EPS21 goggles made by Shalon Chemical Industries. The eye wear can be fitted with a wide-range of secondary lenses, which act as shields against solar and laser radiation, besides providing protection against dust and the wind, and ballistic attacks.

Laser defense eyewear market in the Americas

In 2015, the Americas accounted for around 38% of the global laser defense eyewear market, with the US being the highest contributor. Technavio’s analysts expect that the laser defense eyewear market in the Americas will witness a uniform growth during the forecast period. In 2008, the US government introduced Military Combat Eye Protection (MCEP) program that authenticates and approves the use of protective eyewear devices for military personnel. The glasses provide protection against different types of threat such as ranging from eye injuries, ballistic projectiles, fragmented munitions to dust and sand, plus ultraviolet (UV) light and laser beams and they are listed in the Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL). Moreover, the US Army is trying to launch goggles that also provide laser eye protection under the NGEP project.  Vendors are focusing to design such eye wear that have laser protection configuration, additional ballistic fragmentation protection, high optical quality, and flexible to varying light conditions.

Laser defense eyewear market in APAC

In 2015, APAC accounted for around 24% of the global laser defense eyewear market and the region will witness fastest growth during the forecast period. The factors driving growth in the laser defense market are the development of laser weapons for the police, law enforcement personnel, and armed troops. The key revenue generators of this region are China and Japan with significant progress in high-energy, solid-state laser (HEL) weapon development. Some key vendors of the region such as Yamamoto Optical in Japan, Island Optical Systems in Singapore, Lastek in Australia, and Shanghai Oxlasers Electronics in China, which develop and provide LPEs and have significantly contributed to the growth of the global laser eyewear market. Most of these companies meet the standards set by ANSI and EN, a new Australian safety standard for the testing and certification of LPEs. Owing to such developments, the laser eyewear market will witness a growth in the APAC region, leading the countries to levy certain restrictions on the use of laser or for the safe use of laser.

The top leading vendors operating in the global laser defense eyewear market are:

  • Gentex
  • Honeywell International
  • PerriQuest
  • Revision Military

Other prominent vendors in the market include ESS, Laser Safety Industries, Metamaterial Technologies Inc. (MTI), and NoIR LaserShields.
