Global Sterilized Packaged Market to Witness Enormous Demand from the Biopharmaceutical Industry through 2020

Renewable energy

The global sterilized packaging film market was valued at around $55 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach almost $75 billion by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on sterilized packaging for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis, under the packaging vertical, discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global sterilized packaging market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Amcor, Baxter, BD, Bemis, Gerresheimer, and Schott.

In terms of geographical analysis, North America is expected to continue its dominance over the global market and is likely to reach almost $29 billion in revenue by 2020. The growth of the market in North America will be fueled by the growth of the healthcare industry in the region.

“Packaging manufacturers are designing eco-friendly and cost-effective packages for medical devices and drugs due to increasing concerns about sustainability. They are trying to design and launch biodegradable packaging materials to cater to the growing demand. However, eco-friendly packaging is expensive to manufacture, which is pressurizing vendors to increase R&D activities to develop cost-effectively and sustainable packaging,” says Sharan Raj, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on packaging.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Growing demand from biopharmaceuticals market

Biopharmaceuticals have specific needs when packaged in containers as these drugs are sensitive to interaction with syringe and vial components. If the containers are not sterilized properly, the drugs react with the components of the containers, resulting in the denaturation of the drug and protein aggregation. As a result, it is imperative that the containers that carry the drug are sterilized before the drugs come in contact with the containers. Biopharmaceutical packaging manufacturers are now increasingly adopting ready-to-sterilize and ready-to-use closure processes for the containers.

Increased use of blow-fill-seal packaging technology

Packaging for drugs are frequently updated and refined to keep them contaminant free. Manufacturers are using the blow-fill-seal method of packaging drugs, specifically in plastic containers, to keep the contents sterile. Drugs packaged through this process are free from the risk of contamination due to organisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus, which can cause serious complications that include drug potency, protein aggravation, and infections. The blow-fill-seal method is used only for plastic packaging and is not used in glass and paper packaging as glass bottles can break during the transit and paper and cardboard can harbor molds and bacteria.

Rising global demand for pre-fillable syringes

The demand for prefilled syringes is increasing as they eliminate the need to draw drugs from the vials. Inserting a syringe into a drug vial to draw out a dose can result in dosing errors as well as contamination, whereas pre-filled syringes have the right amount of dosage in them. The use of prefilled syringes has reduced dosage errors by almost 35%. Plastics are replacing glass and metal in prefilled syringes as they are considered safer and are also compatible with most sterilization processes. Innovations in pre-fillable syringes are expected to augment the demand for sterilized packaging during the forecast period.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Alexander, American Health Packaging, AptarGroup, Barger Packaging, Cardinal Health, Catalent Pharma Solutions, CCL Industries, Clondalkin Group Holdings, Constantia Flexibles, CWS Contract Packaging, Datwyler Pharma Packaging, EUROMEDEX, Global Closure Systems, IntraPac Group, Klockner Pentaplast Group, Körber Group, Menasha Packaging, Nampak, NNE, Nypro Packaging, RPC Group, SteriPack, Vitro, and Winpak.
