Rising Prevalence of HAIs to Propel the Demand for Antibacterial Glass through 2020: Technavio

Renewable energy

The global antibacterial glass market was valued at more than $151 million in 2015 and is expected to reach around $210 million by 2020, says Technavio.

Technavio has announced its latest market research report on antibacterial glass for the forecast period, 2016-2020. This market analysis, under the glasses and ceramics vertical, discusses the major drivers and key emerging trends that will influence the growth of the global antibacterial glass market during the forecast period. Some of the top vendors listed in this industry analysis include Asahi Glass, Glas Trösch Holding, Nippon Sheet Glass, Saint-Gobain, and Corning.

In terms of geographical analysis, Europe is expected to continue its market domination and is likely to account for a revenue of more than $103 million by 2020. Germany, France, and the UK will emerge as the key revenue-generators.

“Antibacterial nanocoatings are becoming increasingly popular in the global market. Nanoparticles of different materials such as nanosilver, zinc oxide nanoparticles, nanocellulose, iron oxide nanoparticles, copper nanoparticles, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, carbon nanomaterials, and nanochitosan are used as antimicrobial agents. When antibacterial nanocoating is impregnated on a surface, it forms a protective layer that makes the treated surface microbial repellent. Antibacterial nanocoatings find applications in medical devices, urinary catheters, household appliances, electronic goods, and stainless steel coatings,” says Ajay Adikhari, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on  glasses and ceramics.

The new industry research report from Technavio analyzes some of the key drivers and trends responsible for the growth of this market and its sub-segments.

Rising prevalence of HAIs

HAIs or nosocomial infection are caused by the transfer of pathogens, such as bacteria, virus, and fungi from the hospital environment or the hospital staff. Patients with medical devices such as central lines, urinary catheters, and ventilators or who undergoe surgical procedures, are at a high risk of acquiring HAIs. In the developing countries, approximately 10% of the hospital patients of developing countries acquire HAIs, and in developed countries, approximately 7% of the hospital patients acquire the HAIs. The emergence of such pathogens and the resultant rise in HAIs is augmenting the demand for antibacterial glass materials in the hospitals, leading to market growth.

Increasing demand from military equipment

In the military and defense sector, antibacterial glass is used in critical infection-prone areas where there is a high requirement of sterilization and proper sanitation. The volatile working conditions in the military areas have increased the susceptibility of the military equipment to microbial activities. The use of antibacterial glass will help prevent the spread of infection and help reduce the damage caused by biological weapons. As a result, there is increased demand for antibacterial glass from the defense sector.

Adverse health effects of BPA in packaging industry

BPA is an industrial chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and resins. It has the tendency to seep into the food or beverage from the containers made up of the BPA. Exposure to BPA is a very critical issue and can cause detrimental effects on the brain and prostate glands of infants and children, as well as their behavior. There is also a possible link between BPA and the rise in blood pressure. So, to replace the harmful BPA chemical, the silver-ionized antibacterial glass is used in the packaging industry. The use of antibacterial glass helps neutralize the adverse effects of BPA in the packaging industry.

Some of the other prominent vendors identified in this report are Archello, Beijing JiYan-Tech, BUFA Glas, Essex Safety Glass, Innovative Glass, Ishizuka Glass, Morley Glass & Glazing, MO-SCI, Joh. Sprinz, and Sumita Optical Glass.
