Adoption of Healthy Lifestyle to Benefit the Food and Beverage Industry

Dietary Fiber Market

Today, more and more people are switching to healthy and well-balanced lifestyles. Whether engaging in physical activities or choosing organic, homemade food, the aim is to lead an enriching and disease-free life. Keeping this requirement in mind, vendors in the food and beverage industry have created a number of food supplements and healthy snack options.

Will switching to healthy food choices have a negative affect on the extruded snacks market?

Typically, extruded snacks are considered unhealthy and the cause of diseases like the obesity, diabetes, and heart problems. However, vendors such as Calbee, ITC, and Kellogg’s have improved their extruded snack offerings by including more protein and lowering the starch content. Therefore, the trend towards healthy lifestyle will not have a negative impact on the extruded snacks market. Rather, the demand for better snacking options has encouraged manufacturers to innovate and create healthy substitutes in the snack segment.

How useful are fish oil products and fruit & vegetable juices?

Health conscious people are gradually moving towards higher consumption of omega-3 supplements, as omega-3s improve muscle function. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reveals that the number of Americans taking dietary supplements has increased by 45% since 1992. There has also been a significant increase in the intake of fish oil products. Apart from omega-3, fish oil products are also a rich source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These ingredients help in maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and stronger bones. The study published in JAMA also found that fish oil improves muscle function in older women. Fish oils are believed to be beneficial for pets as well. For dogs, fish oil regulates their immune system and helps them fight cancer and kidney related diseases.

Analysts at Technavio found that in 2015, Europe was the primary consumer of fish oil products, followed by APAC and South America.

Another important change in the average diet has been the increased intake of fruits and vegetable juices. The main reason behind this growing affinity for natural drinks is increased awareness regarding the side-effects of soda. Soda drinks are a major source of caffeine in the American diet. Additionally, a group of Danish researchers recently found that soda drinks not only increase the propesnity for obesity and diabetes, but also accelerate the aging process, cause cancer, and can lead to hormonal imbalances in children.

Natural fruit and vegetable juices, on the other hand, are rich in nutrients, low in sugar content, and improve the entire metabolic process of the consumer. With innovative marketing campaigns and the trend towards banning the sale of soda drinks in school cafeterias, children are encouraged to increase their intake of vegetable and fruit juices. Keeping this change of drink preferences in mind, soda vendors have begun to make inroads into the fruit and vegetable juices market. The recent acquisitions of Bai Brands and KeVita Inc. by Dr. Pepper and PepsiCo Inc., respectively, are excellent examples of this trend.
