Tablets in Schools and The Global Education PC Market’s Future

Digitization of education is one of the prime initiatives taken by governments nowadays and as a result, The Global Education PC Market is growing tremendously. The market is currently valued at over US$ 10 billion and set to continue rising at a CAGR of 12.08 percent for the next four years.

Not all of the market’s four main sectors (desktops, laptops, tablets, and all-in-one PCs) have such an optimistic forecast however. The education desktop PCs market in particular is expected to take a huge hit during the 2012-2016 period for a few reasons but namely due to their bulkiness and excessive wires in comparison to alternatives like laptops, netbooks, and tablets. These issues are particularly impactful in education environments where classrooms are often small and space saving can be difficult.

In a nutshell, as the modern PC shrinks in size, so do the market shares of larger devices. That said, even some of the more compact education PC alternatives—like laptops—are taking a revenue hit because of the explosion in the popularity of tablet computing.

Indeed, while the CAGR of education laptops is expected to decline by about 10 percent in the next few years, the CAGR for education tablets is expected to jump by almost 40 percent.

With these numbers in mind, the market’s top vendors—many of whom once dealt almost exclusively in desktops and laptops—are now focusing on pushing the sales of tablets.  Just three years ago, the Apple’s release of the iPad marked the first main stream tablet. Today, the Education PC Market’s top four vendors, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, Dell, and Acer are all placing increasing focus on sales of specialized tablets and thinkpads in order to maintain their dominance.

So how will this trend impact the market in the long run? Well, the present verdict is: so far so good, and it’s likely that this will be the case for quite some time. Simply put, the old saying “the bigger the better” has become irrelevant when it comes to the computer world, and it’s going to be the compact, affordable, and highly functional tablet that leads the Global Education PC Market to high profits in the foreseeable future.
